It doesn't matter when or how long a person sleeps, but everyone needs some rest to stay alive. That's what all doctors' thought, until they heard about Jercy Page. Jercy Page, it was said, never slept. Could this be true.'? The doctors decided to see this strange man by themselves.
Jercy Page was ninety years old when the doctors came to his home in New Jersey. They thought for sure that he got some sleep of some kind. So they stayed with him and watched every movement he made. But they were surprised. Though they watched him hour after hour and day after day, they never saw Jercy Page sleeping. Actually, he did not even own a bed. He never needed one.
The only rest that Jercy Page got was sitting in a comfortable chair and reading newspapers. The doctors were puzzled by this strange continuous sleeplessness. They asked him many questions, hoping to find an answer. They found only one answer that might explain his condition. Page remembered some talk about his mother having been injured several days before he was born. But that was all. Was this the real reason? No one could be sure.

B.a person was found who actually didn't need any sleep
C.everyone needs some sleep to stay alive

When I was about 12 I had an enemy, a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings. Week by week her list grew: I was skinny, I wasn&39;t a good student, I was boyish, I talked too loud, and so on. I put up with her as long as I could. At last, with great anger, I ran to my father in tears. He listened to my outburst quietly. Then he asked, "Are the things she says true or not?" True? I wanted to know how to strike back. What did truth have to do with it?
"Mary, didn&39;t you ever wonder what you are really like? Well, you now have that girl&39;s opinion. Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said. " I did as he directed and discovered to my surprise that about half the things were true.
Some of them I couldn&39;t change (like being skinny), but a good number I could and suddenly wanted to change. For the first time in my life I got a fairly clear picture of myself. I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. "That&39;s just for you," he said.
"You know better than anybody else the truth about yourself, once you hear it. But you&39;ve got to learn to listen, not to close your ears in anger or hurt. When something said about you is true you&39;ll know it. You&39;ll find that it will echo inside you. " Daddy&39;s advice has returned to me at many important moments.

Man’s mind is his tool Of survival. The mind is used to gain, use, store, and recall knowledge. It is his mind that enables a famer t0 know what t0 plant, when to harvest it,how to prepare food from the result. It is his mind that enables a hunter to know what he needs to make a spear, how t0 make it,and how to use it.And it is his mind that enables a blacksmith to know how t0 make iron tools. In short,it i s the mind that enables a person to know what to d0 in order tOosurvive.

It is customary for adults to forget how hard and dull and long school is. The learning by memory of all the basic things one must know is a most incredible and unending effort. School is not easy and it is not for the most part very much fun, but then, if you are very lucky, you may find a real teacher. Three teachers in a lifetime are the very best of my luck. My first was a science and math teacher in high school, my second, a professor of creative writing at Stanford, and my third was my friend and partner, ED Rickets.
I have to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that three are as few as there are any other great artists. It might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.
My three teachers had these things in common: They all loved what they were doing; they did not tell, but stimulated a burning desire to know. Under their influence, the horizons sprang wide and fear went away and the unknown became knowable.
I shall speak only of my first teacher because in addition to the other things, she brought discovery. She aroused us to shouting, book-waving discussions. She had the noisiest class in school and she did not even seem to know it. We could never stick to the subject. Our speculation (思绪) ranged the world. She breathed curiosity into us so that we brought in facts or truths shielded in our hands like captured fireflies (萤火虫).
She was fired, and perhaps rightly so, for failing to teach fundamentals. Such things must be learned. But she left a passion in us for the pure knowable world and she inflamed me with a curiosity which has never left. I have had many teachers who told me soon-forgotten facts but only three who created in me a new attitude a new hunger. What deathless power lies in the hands of such a person?
